FALLING HOUSES IN LUKA VILLAGE(cracked houses)

For many years in the past the community of Luka village in Rustenburg has been suffering from impacts of mining .The bigger problem being issues of cracked houses, claimed to be caused by mining companies.

This particular community has strong views that the cracks are result of the mining operating around Luka village, which is mainly Impala Platinum Mines. However the communities, have claimed that the land used was their old ploughing fields and has provided for their livelihood.

One of the old community member who still believes in farming complained that "since mines were erected on our fields , we never had peaceful nights and noons because of the blasting near our community area"

From the community's perspective they say that Impala mine is playing mind games with them. This is because they would take a long time without any meaningful project. When they come they would bring projects of inferior quality like sports ground in near Mogono primary school. Some of this was expressed by a group community members gathered at a meeting in Mogono Primary School, in Luka on the 16th February 2010. Awaiting feedback from a ward councillor after a march to Impala in February. The protest march was another one which brought about the issues of cracked houses exacerbated by blasting.

Presently the community is waiting for Impala management to respond. The follow up meeting is bound to take place on the coming month of April.
